John Richard Perry, JD, MA Licensed Professional Counselor, Care and Counseling Clinical Director, Mediator and Adjunct Instructor at UMSL, died Sunday, Nov. 21 of complications from major surgery. John was born in Los Angeles on June 2, 1946. He was 64 yrs old.
He leaves behind his partner, Gail Maume of Atlanta, his father John Richard Perry, Sr. of Ventura, CA, his daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Alexandra of Phoenix, son Garth, daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandchildren Will and Claire of Tucson.
John attended the US Naval Academy (Class of 1970), the U. of Arizona Law School, St. Mary of the Woods U., Eden Theological Seminary, U of MO-St. Louis and the Graduate Theological Foundation. He also completed the Psychoanalytic Institute's Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program, Care and Counseling's Psychodynamic Training Program and all but his dissertation for his PhD.
Mr. Perry, formerly an attorney and mediator in Arizona, moved to St. Louis in 1991 where he worked for the St. Louis County Court as a mediator and social worker. In 1992 he began his work as a professional counselor and in 1998 he joined Care and Counseling, Missouri's only pastoral counseling center. One of his greatest passions was teaching professionals about the integration of emotional and psychological issues with spiritual awareness. He believed this integration "provided a special way of understanding how human beings and relationships work and thrive."
A service of celebration of Mr. Perry's life is scheduled for January 15, 2011, 2 PM at St. John's Episcopal Church, 3664 Arsenal St. in the Tower Grove neighborhood. A reception will follow at Care and Counseling, 12141 Ladue Road, 63141, at 3:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to call 314.878.4340.
